Power Laws

You are at the street fair on a warm September evening. Ten food trucks line the curb; one has a queue snaking around the corner while the others idle, oil popping, chalk menus hopeful. A woman with a clicker keeps counting. In your head the count rises like a narrow spire, then drifts into a thin hush of stragglers. Someone has sketched a curve in chalk by the storm drain — tall at the start, an arrow scrawled head, then falling into a red-braced line labeled long tail.

Power Laws: The Few That Matter Most
Plate. Power Laws — head and long tail.

Many processes throw their weight to a few giants and scatter crumbs to the rest. City sizes, earthquake magnitudes, fortunes, book sales, links on the web — most of the mass sits in the first inches, the head; a long thin tail holds everything else. The average fumbles here; a single outlier can drag the sum. Charts make more sense on log scales. In a power law, doubling the rank more than halves the share, and rare events dominate totals. The world is not even; it stacks itself, fast, then stretches on almost flat.

Therefore

Find the head and the tail. Spend attention where the head lives, and build to survive or harvest the exceptional that hides in the tail.

Zipf, 1949

George Kingsley Zipf, a Harvard linguist, spent the 1930s counting words by hand. He stacked index cards on his desk in Cambridge, tally marks crawling across them, then checked newspapers, speeches, novels. In 1949 he published Human Behavior and the Principle of Least Effort: take any large body of text and rank the words by frequency; the second word occurs about half as often as the first, the third a third, and so on. A handful of words carry most of the text; the rest taper into a very long tail. The curve looked the same in German, Chinese, and Ulysses. The pattern was not literary. It was structural.

A small reminder, on a planning board or laptop lid, that a few entries carry the weight and the far-off tail can still tilt the sum.
