U.S. Constitution, Article I, Section 9
No Title of Nobility shall be
The same moment, today
A line forms at the boarding gate at an airport, and a man steps straight to the front because his ticket has gold lettering on it. Everyone waiting in the regular line has paid for a seat on the same plane, but the airline treats him like a different kind of person. He gets wider armrests, free drinks, and a warm towel. It's a harmless perk for spending extra money on a flight, but nobody wants their government to work like an airline.

The founders didn't want anyone to inherit power just because their father had it. In the old country, a duke was legally better than a farmer on the day he was born. The law protected his rank, his land, and his seat in government. This line stopped that from happening here. It says that no matter how rich someone gets, the law can't ever crown them or hand down public power in their bloodline.
The lesson
Watch out when people start acting like some families just naturally belong in charge. Nobody gets a permanent seat at the table just because of their last name.
Where this comes from
Philadelphia, 1787
In the summer of 1787, thirty-nine delegates met at the Pennsylvania State House in Philadelphia. George Washington presided over the room. The delegates took this rule from the older Articles of Confederation. John Rutledge's Committee of Detail put it into the draft in August, and Gouverneur Morris helped write the final words in September. Alexander Hamilton later called this clause the cornerstone of republican government in Federalist No. 84. He knew that if the state could hand out titles, equal citizenship would fall apart.
Nobody is born with a legal right to rule over anyone else in this country.
