Halloween Before Pumpkins
Pull a kale stalk blindfold; its shape foretells your spouse.
The same moment, today
People sitting around a lunch table will often read their horoscopes out loud off a phone. Almost nobody at the table actually believes that the stars care about their Tuesday. Still, everyone listens when their own month comes up, and someone usually laughs if the prediction hits close to home. It's hard to resist a tiny peek around the corner, even when we know it's made up. We just like having an excuse to talk about what we hope will happen.

Long before modern dating, people looked for partners inside their own small farming villages. Getting married was a massive gamble, and nobody had enough information to feel sure of their choice. Going into the dark garden didn't solve that uncertainty, but it gave everyone a way to laugh about it together. When friends tease each other over an ugly root, the big life question becomes a shared joke. It turns private worry into an evening game.
The lesson
When a big decision makes you nervous, talking about it with friends takes the pressure off. You don't have to carry the whole weight in your own head.
Where this comes from
Robert Burns and the Halloween Garden
In 1785, the poet Robert Burns recorded Halloween traditions along the River Doon in Ayrshire, Scotland. In his notes to the poem, he explained how unmarried youths walked into vegetable gardens hand in hand with their eyes shut. Each person pulled the first stalk they ran into. A crooked stalk meant a crooked spouse, and clinging dirt meant money in the bank. They cut open the stem to see if their match tasted sweet or sour, and hung it over the front door to guess the person's name.
People have always used silly party games to talk about the things that scare them.
