Content to Seem Foolish
You show up to a friend's birthday in the same jacket you always wear. People pass around the new phones and compare camera tricks. You still use the cracked one because rent went up. Someone makes a light joke about your 'classic model'. Later the group plans a big weekend. You pass because you have a night shift and a test. In the chat a friend adds a laughing emoji and asks if you ever have fun. Your face gets hot and you start to type a defense.

We hate looking cheap, boring, or behind. So we spend money or time on signals other people can see. We defend our choices because we want the laurel that comes from approval. Epictetus says to drop that chase and work on yourself. If you care less about how you look in public things, you can learn, save, and rest without apology. Improvement starts when you accept small hits to your image on purpose.
Therefore
Notice when you are about to do something only to look smart or stylish. Choose the action that helps you grow, and let people think what they will.
Thomas Gilovich, 2000
At Cornell in 2000, psychologist Thomas Gilovich asked students to do something cringey. They put on a Barry Manilow T-shirt and walked into a room where other students were filling out forms. Then they guessed how many people would notice the shirt. On average they thought about half the room would spot it. When the observers were asked later, only about a quarter had noticed. Gilovich, with Victoria Medvec and Kenneth Savitsky, called this the spotlight effect. We think eyes are on us far more than they are. That gap is permission to look odd while you do what matters.
A small reminder, on a wallet or a laptop lid, that growth needs you to risk looking uncool so you save, study, and ask questions.
