Lucius Annaeus Seneca (c. 4 BCE – 65 CE), tutor to Nero and ultimately ordered by him to commit suicide. Seneca's Letters from a Stoic — 124 letters to his friend Lucilius — became one of the most-read works of Stoic ethics in any language. Letter 31, often titled On Siren Songs, argues that the lure of comfort and applause is what most diverts a person from the harder, more honest work of self-cultivation.
