U.S. Constitution, Article II, Section 1, the oath of office

preserve, protect and defend the Constitution of the…

The same moment, today

A neighbor hands over a ring of house keys before leaving for vacation. She points out the alarm code on a notepad, the food for the cat, and the plant by the window. She isn't giving away her house. She is trusting someone else to keep it safe until she gets back. It's a simple deal, and both people understand the rules. You don't get to sell the sofa, and you don't treat the house like it belongs to you.

That's the point of the oath. The president doesn't swear loyalty to a person, a party, or a patch of land. The promise is to a set of written rules that was already there. When someone takes the job, they don't own the office. They just agree to protect the system while they're in charge. If they try to bend the rules for themselves, they've broken the promise that gave them power.

The lesson

Whenever someone takes charge of a project, watch what they put first. If they treat the rules like a nuisance instead of their job, don't trust them with the keys.

Where this comes from

Thirty-five words in Philadelphia

The delegates wrote these thirty-five words at the Pennsylvania State House in 1787, while George Washington presided over the room. On September 12, the Committee of Style swapped out the phrase 'judgment and power' for the simpler word 'Ability.' The oath became a mandatory step before any president can take power. Most speak it outside the Capitol on January 20. But when a sudden crisis hits, it happens wherever someone can find a judge. Lyndon B. Johnson spoke it aboard Air Force One in Dallas on November 22, 1963, right in front of U.S. District Judge Sarah T. Hughes.

Holding power means guarding the rules instead of putting yourself above them.
