Deception
The Wolf in Sheep's Clothing
Morning pasture, thistles dry and the ground pocked from hooves. The flock hums—shear of teeth in grass, a woolly shuffle. One animal moves differently. Too deliberate. Head low, shoulders narrow under a draped pelt that doesn’t quite fit. A breeze lifts the ragged fleece and you catch a dark ridge of guard hair, a muzzle too pointed, eyes the dull yellow of winter straw. When it steps, the near foreleg slips and a hooked nail shows where a hoof should be. The sheep beside it keeps chewing, unalarmed.

Predators borrow the uniform of trust to cross thresholds. A phishing note copies the invoice template and walks straight through accounts payable. A contractor flashes a laminate badge and is waved past the turnstile. A friend forwards a link; the login page looks right, so you type. Even inside teams, a colleague dresses malice as collegiality—helpful tone, shared joke, quiet isolation of one target. Disguises work because we key on surfaces while behavior, tiny and off-tempo, tells the truth.
Therefore
Watch gait, not wool. Specify tests that force behavior to reveal itself before trust is granted.
Madoff, 2008
Bernard Madoff ran his investment firm from midtown Manhattan for decades, a pillar: former NASDAQ chairman, steady returns, tasteful offices. Palm Beach friends and European banks sent him billions because the statements arrived like clockwork, modest gains, no drama. Harry Markopolos sent the SEC a memo in 1999—mathematically impossible—but the fleece was thick: charitable boards, country clubs, a calm voice. The real work happened on the locked 17th floor of the Lipstick Building, where clerks backdated trades and printed the numbers investors expected. In December 2008, with redemptions surging, Madoff told his sons it was a giant lie. The uniform of respectability had walked the wolf to the center of the flock.
