Langer and Rodin, 1976
At a Connecticut nursing home in 1976, psychologists Ellen Langer and Judith Rodin ran a simple test. On one floor, residents were told they would choose their own movie night and care for a small plant. On another floor, staff said they would choose the movie and care for the plant. Three weeks later, the first group looked more alert and active on nurses’ ratings. Eighteen months later, 15 percent of that group had died, versus 30 percent in the other. The study was not magic. It showed that even small areas of real control change how people feel and act.
