Halloween Before Pumpkins

Samhain fires on the hills began the Gaelic winter.

The same moment, today

Most houses have a day in late October when the heat goes on. Someone notices cold floors in the morning, or breath shows in the kitchen hallway. People grumble about the heating bill, but nobody wants to sit in a cold room with their coat on. It's the small boundary between the easy weeks of autumn and the long stretch of dark evenings. Once the thermostat clicks on, everyone knows the easy weather is gone for months.

People have always marked the exact evening when the cold season starts. Letting every fire go out forces everyone to notice the change at the same moment. It's hard to ignore winter when your hearth is cold and dark. Starting fresh from a single flame brought the whole community under one shared rule. It made facing months of dark weather feel like something the whole town handled together.

The lesson

When a hard season begins, don't pretend things are the same as before. Acknowledge the shift early and get ready with the people around you.

Where this comes from

The fire at the Hill of Ward

Around 1634, the historian Geoffrey Keating wrote about how King Túathal Techtmhar set up the feast of Samhain. According to Keating, all the domestic fires in Ireland had to be put out on the eve of Samhain. The druids gathered on the hill of Tlachtgha, now called the Hill of Ward in County Meath, and lit a great bonfire. Every household had to rekindle their own hearth from that sacred fire and pay a tax of a silver coin called a scrúpall. The historian Ronald Hutton points out that earlier medieval records mention big gatherings at Samhain, but they don't mention this nationwide rule about relighting fires.

Facing a long, cold season together makes the dark months much easier to bear.
