May the Tusked One Guide Us
The story
This is the Ganesha Gayatri, built on the pattern of the oldest Gayatri in the Rig Veda: we know, we meditate, may he urge us on. It names him by two of his marks, Ekadanta, the one with one tusk, and Vakratunda, the one with the curved trunk. In his standard image both marks are shown as the tradition describes them: the right tusk broken, the trunk turned to his left.
एकदन्ताय विद्महे। वक्रतुण्डाय धीमहि। तन्नो दन्ती प्रचोदयात्॥
ekadantāya vidmahe | vakratuṇḍāya dhīmahi | tanno dantī pracodayāt ||
Ganapati Atharvashirsha, verse 8 in the common numbering (the Ganesha Gayatri); our translation
The same moment, today
A driver is looking for a new office in a part of town she doesn't know. Her phone loses its signal just where the road splits three ways, and the car behind her taps its horn. She doesn't need a map of the whole city. She needs someone who knows the area to point at the right lane.
This verse asks Ganesha for that kind of help. It follows the pattern of the oldest Gayatri, in the Rig Veda: we know him, we meditate on him, may he urge us on. It names him by two marks, Ekadanta, the one with one tusk, and Vakratunda, the one with the curved trunk. In most images his right tusk is broken and his trunk turns to his left. The English here is our own plain rendering of the Sanskrit.
The lesson
When a decision feels too big, ask for the next step instead of the whole plan. That's usually enough to keep going.
Where this comes from
A Gayatri for Ganesha
A Gayatri is a short prayer in a fixed meter. The most famous one, in the Rig Veda, asks the sun god Savitr to stir our minds, and later Hindus wrote Gayatris on the same pattern for many gods. This one is in the Ganapati Atharvashirsha, a hymn from about the 16th or 17th century, though tradition attaches it to the Atharva Veda.
Asking for the next step is a fair thing to pray for.
