The Inner Well
You sit with a choice after a messy invoice. The vendor is a friend, and the number is wrong. You open a browser and read advice threads. You ask two coworkers what they would do. You scroll for a rule that takes the weight off you. An hour goes by. Dinner gets cold. You keep hoping the right answer lives out there somewhere. It does not. It lives in the quiet place you keep skipping. You have not gone there yet.

Marcus is saying the source of good is inside you. You look outside because it feels safer and faster. It also lets you blame the crowd if it goes wrong. Looking within is not guessing by mood. It means asking what you believe is fair, brave, and helpful, and stating it. The well bubbles when you dig with questions, write your reasons, and name the person you are trying to be.
Therefore
When a choice is heavy, spend five quiet minutes alone and write your answer and why. Then act on the best reason, not the loudest voice.
Geoffrey L. Cohen, 2006
In 2006, psychologist Geoffrey L. Cohen and his team ran a simple test in two U.S. middle schools. Early in the term, seventh graders spent fifteen minutes writing about the personal values that mattered most to them. A control group wrote about values that did not matter to them. That short bit of digging changed behavior. The students who wrote about their own values earned higher grades that semester, and the effect was strongest for Black students who often felt judged at school. The gap in course grades shrank, and follow-ups showed benefits months and even years later. A few quiet minutes with honest words helped students act from the inside, not from fear.
A small reminder, on a journal page or a laptop lid, that the good you want is a well inside you, and it rises when you keep digging.
