Quality of Thought
You see a calendar invite from your manager for four o’clock with no subject line. Your stomach tightens. You replay yesterday and hunt for mistakes. Your mood often follows whatever thought is loudest. We guess at danger and fairness and what other people mean, and our guesses skew negative. Low‑quality thoughts are sloppy, absolute, and untested. High‑quality thoughts are accurate, proportionate, and fair to other explanations. When you raise the quality of the thought, the feeling usually follows. You cannot edit the world, but you can edit the sentence in your head.

Steven Hollon, 2005
In 2005, psychologist Steven Hollon and colleagues ran a trial at Vanderbilt and Penn with adults who had major depression. Some people improved on antidepressant medication. Others improved with cognitive therapy that taught them to spot and question automatic thoughts. Then the team stopped treatment and watched what happened over the following months. People who had learned the thought tools were less likely to relapse than those who had improved on medication and then discontinued it. The skills stuck after the sessions ended. The study’s point was simple: when you change how you think, you change how you fare.
