Knowledge Without Character
In October 1925 Mahatma Gandhi was touring Kutch in western India. His weekly paper, Young India, was being printed back in Ahmedabad. A correspondent whom he called a fair friend had sent him a list of seven items, copied from a sermon given earlier that year at Westminster Abbey by Frederick Lewis Donaldson. Gandhiji did not write a long commentary. He published the seven phrases together on 22 October 1925 under the heading Seven Social Sins. Right in the middle sat the four words: "Knowledge without character."
A clever person can do more damage than a foolish one. When someone learns how systems work, they get tools that amplify whatever they decide to do. If they only care about winning or staying ahead, that learning just helps them cheat without getting caught. A sharp mind without decency leaves other people to clean up the mess. Gandhiji added a note saying people had to know these sins through the heart and not just the intellect. Brains make someone capable, but only habits of fair dealing make them safe to be around.
Therefore
Look at what a person does when nobody is grading them before you trust their expertise. Skill without decency just makes harm more efficient.
Sevagram, 1947
In 1947 Arun Gandhi was twelve and went to live with his grandfather at Sevagram. The boy thought being clever in the classroom was what mattered, and he got angry when schoolmates provoked him. He threw punches and came home bruised. Gandhiji did not scold him or take his books away. Instead, he handed Arun a slip of paper with the seven lines from Young India and asked him to track his own temper against them. The boy sat with the list every evening. Writing down his mistakes stopped the fights. It showed Arun that learning facts is easy, but training yourself to use them decently takes daily work.
A small reminder, on the desk or the notebook, that facts are easy to gather but decency is harder to practice.
