Do or Die
On the evening of 8 August 1942, Mahatma Gandhi stood before a crowd at Gowalia Tank Maidan in Bombay. The Second World War was underway, and the Congress leaders had just passed the Quit India resolution. Jawaharlal Nehru had moved the resolution, and Vallabhbhai Patel had backed it. Maulana Abul Kalam Azad presided from the platform. Mahatma Gandhi knew the police would arrest everyone on the stage before morning. He wanted the people to act without waiting for orders. He gave them one sentence: "Here is a mantra, a short one, that I give you. You may imprint it on your hearts and let every breath of yours give expression to it. The mantra is: "Do or Die.""
People often think a difficult task requires a thick manual. Gandhiji did the opposite and reduced the whole plan to three words. Either the people would free India, or they would die trying, but they would no longer live as subjects. He told every listener to consider themselves free that very night. When you cannot manage the next steps yourself, giving long instructions only confuses the room. You give people one aim that they can keep in mind when they are entirely on their own.

When you hand over responsibility, give people a single clear aim instead of a long list of rules. If the instruction is short, they can carry it anywhere.

Many observers assumed the movement would collapse the moment the British locked up the leaders. Before dawn on 9 August, the police arrested Gandhiji, Kasturba Gandhi, and his secretary Mahadev Desai, taking them to the Aga Khan Palace in Poona. Left without direction, crowds faced police gunfire across the country, and the authorities banned the Congress. In detention, Mahadev Desai died of a heart attack on 15 August 1942, and Kasturba Gandhi died on 22 February 1944. The British crushed the street protests, but they could not erase the resolve. The phrase had turned every ordinary citizen into their own guide, and the demand for independence never went away.
