Quit India speech, Gowalia Tank Maidan, Bombay, 8 August 1942
Do or Die
On 8 August 1942, the All India Congress Committee met at Gowalia Tank Maidan in Bombay. The Second World War was going on, and the British government had refused to promise Indian independence. The committee passed the Quit India resolution that night. Jawaharlal Nehru moved the resolution, and Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel seconded it. Mahatma Gandhi then stood before the crowd and spoke in Hindustani and English. He said: "Here is a mantra, a short one, that I give you. You may imprint it on your hearts and let every breath of yours give expression to it. The mantra is: \"Do or Die.\""
Gandhiji told the crowd they must either free India or die in the attempt. Some listeners thought the line meant taking up weapons. He corrected them at once. He insisted the fight had to remain non-violent, using ahimsa, which means non-harming. He knew the police had guns and would arrest every senior organiser before sunrise. If the people turned to riots, the army would easily crush them. But if ordinary people acted on their own without fear, the government could not run the country. The phrase was a direct command to take personal responsibility.

Aga Khan Palace, Poona, 1942
Before dawn on 9 August 1942, the British police arrested Gandhiji, his wife Kasturba Gandhi, and his secretary Mahadev Desai under the Defence of India Rules. They were locked inside the Aga Khan Palace at Poona. Desai suffered a heart attack and died there on 15 August 1942. Kasturba died in the same prison on 22 February 1944. Across India, factory workers struck and crowds faced police bullets without any central committee to guide them. The government arrested over ninety thousand people, but the British could not restore the old order. Gandhiji was released in May 1944, and Gowalia Tank Maidan is now named August Kranti Maidan.
