No Accidental Wisdom
You get an email with feedback on a report. One sentence feels unfair. Your chest heats up. You start to type a sharp reply. Then you remember a short rule you wrote on a sticky note last month: wait one hour before sending anything angry. You close the draft and set a timer. When it goes off, you read the thread again and call the person instead. The talk is calm, and the fix is clear. That outcome was not luck. You trained it.
Seneca’s point is plain: clear judgment does not appear on its own. It comes from deliberate practice, small rules, and honest review after mistakes. We want to think we will just know better next time, but we rarely do without a method. You build wisdom the way you build strength, with reps that target a weakness. You write questions before meetings, and you keep a short decision log, and you test your hunches. Luck can hand you a win, but it cannot teach you why.

Anders Ericsson, 1993
In 1993, the psychologist Anders Ericsson and two colleagues studied violinists at the Hochschule der Künste in Berlin. Teachers split the students into three groups: likely soloists, solid orchestra players, and future teachers. The researchers asked about daily schedules and had the students keep practice logs. The top group spent far more time on focused, solo practice that attacked hard passages, and they arranged their days to protect that time. The groups did not differ much in enthusiasm or early starts. What separated them was method and steady hours on the right work.
A small reminder, on a laptop lid or a desk lamp base, that sound judgment grows from practice you schedule, not from luck you hope for.
