Antifragility

You buy new hiking boots. You keep them in the closet to keep them nice. The leather stays stiff. On the first real hike, your heels bleed by mile three. If you had worn them on short walks, in a little rain and grit, the leather would have softened and the seams would have settled. The small scuffs would have shaped them to you. We do this with more than boots. We try to keep things untouched, and we are surprised when the first gust breaks them.

Antifragility Mental Model
Plate. Antifragility — gains from hits and shocks.

Some things get better when they take small hits. Muscles grow after strain, and bones add density when they are loaded. Immune systems learn from tiny exposures. Teams improve when they run blameless postmortems on small outages and fix one real cause. If you block every bump, the system forgets how to respond. Then the first big shove is the one that shatters it.

Therefore

Design for small, recoverable shocks. Cap the downside and let the upside compound.

LEAP Trial, 2015

In 2015, pediatric allergist Gideon Lack and colleagues published the LEAP trial. They enrolled 640 British infants who were at high risk of peanut allergy. Half were told to avoid peanuts until age five. Half were fed small amounts of peanut snacks, like Bamba, several times a week. At the end, about 17 percent of the avoidance group had a peanut allergy. In the exposure group it was about 3 percent. The small, regular dose did not just fail to harm. It trained the immune system not to panic. Exposure, managed and limited, made the children safer.

A small reminder, on a laptop lid or a training log, that small, safe shocks today can make the whole system sturdier for the real ones.
